This sacred region played a vital role in the development of Coptic Christianity, dating back to the 4th century when monastic life first began here. While the valley once housed nearly 50 monasteries, only four have survived through the centuries.
Start your visit at Deir El Baramous, the oldest and most secluded of the surviving monasteries. Then, explore Deir Anba Bishoy, the most important and well-preserved monastery in the area, where the body of Saint Bishoy lies in rest. Finally, visit Deir El Suryani, the smallest but most architecturally unique monastery, known for its stunning frescoes and ancient library.
